Why the 50mm remains a reference focal length

The 50mm sees roughly like the human eye: no wide-angle distortion, no telephoto compression. That's what makes it a formidable learning tool — with a 50mm you can't compensate by zooming; you have to move, get closer, wait. The session rule: one 50mm, one fixed imposed aperture, one hour to tell a place. Three exercises to progress: frame with the naked eye before raising the camera, reshoot the same frame at three distances, and spend one week at a fixed f/2.8. The goal isn't to give up other focal lengths, but to understand what each movement changes in the image.
