Taming harsh midday light

Classic advice: avoid shooting between 11am and 4pm. Yet well-used hard light produces graphic images — sharp shadows, texture, owned contrast. The key is choosing what the light should do: in backlight, it draws halos and silhouettes; in full side sun, it sculpts textures; under a porch or arch, it becomes a natural spotlight. Starting settings: ISO 100, fast shutter to freeze, mid aperture (f/5.6–f/8) when the background matters. Eye shadows in frontal sun: shift the subject one step, or wait for a cloud — two seconds is often enough.
